I cannot look

I cannot look

I listen instead to the peranakan choir in the museum
Your camera outstretched above the crowd
a sling bag
snatches of green and purple
on warm caramel brown

I look
and as you look back
I turn away

On the staircase then, I was
listening to the peranakan choir in the museum.

I look
across the crowd
you look back
both of us inscrutable

A secret thrill, a spill, a feel
a stupid smile a laugh a glimpse
now gone
